What is Generative Engine Optimisation?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), written Generative Engine Optimization in US English, is the work of getting a brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers. This page covers what it is, how it differs from SEO, what a GEO tool has to measure, and where it overlaps with Answer Engine Optimisation.
A short definition
Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of earning mentions and citations in the answers produced by generative engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode. The unit of success is not a blue link at position three. It is whether the answer names you at all, and whether it links back when it does.
The phrase entered use alongside Answer Engine Optimisation, and in practice the two are used interchangeably. If a distinction is drawn, GEO is the broader term for optimising against systems that generate an answer, and AEO is the narrower one for being the source an answer is built from.
How GEO differs from SEO
| Aspect | Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| The unit | A ranking position for a keyword, on a page of ten blue links. | A mention inside one generated answer, and a citation back to your site when the engine links its sources. |
| The query | Short keywords typed into a search box. | Full questions asked in conversation, often with context the searcher would never have typed into Google. |
| The competition | Whoever else ranks for that keyword. | Whoever else the answer names, which is frequently not the same set of companies, and is decided per question rather than per keyword. |
| The measurement | Rank trackers, plus click data in Search Console. | Direct sampling. An answer that sends no click leaves no analytics trail, so the answers have to be collected and read. |
| The lever | Your own pages, links and technical health. | Your own pages plus the third-party sources an engine leans on: review sites, directories, round-ups and industry press. |
How generative engines pick sources
None of these companies publishes a ranking function, so anything stated as a formula is a guess. What can be observed is the behaviour of the answers themselves, across thousands of them, and four patterns hold.
They retrieve before they answer
Most consumer AI answers now run a live retrieval step. What is retrievable at the moment of the question matters more than what ranked last quarter, which is why a fresh page can be cited within days.
They lean on sources that already agree
Round-ups, review platforms, directories and trade press are cited far more often than a vendor's own site. Being named on the pages an engine already trusts is usually faster than out-ranking them.
They reward answerable structure
Content that states an answer in the first paragraph, uses question-shaped headings and keeps facts near the claim is easier to quote. Anything that requires reading three sections to extract a fact tends not to get quoted.
They vary by engine and by place
The same question puts different companies in a Perplexity answer than in a Google AI Overview, and a different set again in Sydney than in Melbourne. One engine sampled once is not a measurement.
What a GEO tool has to measure
GEO software exists because none of this is visible in Google Analytics or Search Console. An AI answer that never sends a click leaves no trace in either. Five things have to be measured directly, by asking the engines the questions your buyers ask and reading what comes back.
01
Visibility
The share of tracked answers that name your brand, per engine, over time. One reading is an anecdote; the series is the measurement.
AI visibility tracking02
Share of voice
Your citations set against the competitors named in the same answers, so a flat score still tells you whether you are gaining or losing ground.
Competitor tracking03
Position and framing
Where you land inside an answer, and whether the sentence around your name is positive, neutral or negative. Named last and hedged is not the same as recommended first.
Sentiment04
The sources behind the answer
The domains and URLs an engine actually cited, ranked, so source work goes where the answers are built rather than where it feels productive.

Place
Answers differ city by city. A national average of two cities you win and six you do not looks identical to being mid-table everywhere.
Local AI visibilityFrequently asked questions
- Is GEO the same as AEO?
- In practice, yes. Generative Engine Optimisation and Answer Engine Optimisation are used interchangeably for the same work: being named and cited in AI answers. Where people separate them, GEO covers optimising against systems that generate an answer and AEO covers being the source that answer is built from.
- Is it Optimisation or Optimization?
- Both. Generative Engine Optimisation is the British and Australian spelling and Generative Engine Optimization is the US one. They refer to the same practice, and the abbreviation GEO is identical either way.
- Does GEO replace SEO?
- No. Generative engines retrieve from the open web, so the crawlability, structure and authority that SEO builds is the raw material GEO works with. What changes is the measurement and the target: the answer rather than the ranking.
- Can I see AI answers in Google Analytics or Search Console?
- Not the answers themselves. You can sometimes see referral traffic from an AI product when a citation is clicked, but an answer that satisfies the buyer sends no click and leaves no trace. That gap is the reason GEO tools sample the engines directly.
- How long does it take to show up in an AI answer?
- It varies by engine and by how much retrieval the answer does. A page that is retrievable and answers the question cleanly can be cited within days, while a mention that depends on being added to a third-party round-up moves at that publisher's pace. Tracking daily is what tells you which of the two happened.
- What does Scout LLM do here?
- Scout LLM tracks the five things above across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode, daily and down to a single city, then drafts the fix for a question you are missing from and records whether the citation came back.
